Weaving the Sounds Together

INTERWOVEN is a multi-cultural ensemble whose mission is to integrate the sounds of East and West, as well as Old and New.

Pioneers of intercultural music that interlaces historic sonorities of Eastern Asia and Western Europe, INTERWOVEN is currently in its fourth season as a chamber ensemble. Taking inspiration from its birthplace, New York City, where countless cultures coexist and thrive, INTERWOVEN celebrates and integrates traditions, aesthetics and communities from various heritages through performing, commissioning, and recording contemporary music.

The ensemble made its debut in October 2021 at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City, with the funding from the City Artist Corps Grant. The group has since appeared in venues such as: Kansas University Asian Classical Music Initiative; University of Toronto; Wing Luke Museum in Seattle; Hill and Hollow Music in Saranac, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chinatown Arts Week, Roulette Intermedium, Center for Remembering and Sharing in New York City. INTERWOVEN made its Canadian debut in May 2024, at the Vancouver Civic Centre Annex.

INTERWOVEN served as a guest artist at the Longy School of Music in Massachusetts in spring 2023. The ensemble is committed to introducing the soundscapes of traditional Asian music, instruments, history and culture to students in educational institutions nationwide, as well as to audiences of non-Asian heritages. The group was awarded two major fundings from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council as well as Canada Council For the Arts for their original community-focused project, FantAsia! in 2023.

Founder and GRAMMY Award winning violinist, Keiko Tokunaga, brings together seasoned musicians who are passionate advocates for the importance of music in social, personal, and political developments and devote much of their time to teaching and educational outreach. The ensemble collaborates with various communities to promote the union between different cultures, and to encourage active dialogues between students, faculty and the audience on socially crucial topics such as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the music field.
